After 10+2 plan your career well

Career planning is one of the most important factors of your professional life. First, you should have a clear idea whether you want to pursue a job or would like to prefer to be on your own. One should always remember that there is a throat cut competition for creating space in this world of work. Second, keep this in view of new developments primarily created by the information technology (IT) and globalisation of the economy; there are more options than ever before. You must have to look for these options. Never forget that specialization is really important in today’s world.
When should you start the career planning? In this competitive world one should start planning there career in the age of 14-15 years when you choose your streams in schools under the 10+2 education pattern. This is the right age to take the first step towards building your career. After 10+2 education you have unlimited options to choose from. This means as your first step you will have to choose from three steams; science, arts/humanities, and commerce and the apt combination of subjects, when you enter the 10+2 level. This choice of stream would determine the course options available to you after your 10+2. For example, if you want to take up medical degree course, you should join science stream, but you should also opt for the combination comprising Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
Before you step into planning your career you may have to consider two issues: 1. Do you need an immediate job because of some adverse family circumstances? 2. Is your family financially sound enough to pay for your professional education?
If you need to step into a job just after you finish your secondary education, but still want to pursue higher education, you may like to take up a suitable course through distance learning mode. There are now
many options available for distance learning. You can study according to your own convenience. As a second big concern the harsh reality is that it is becoming increasingly tough for many middle class families to meet the higher expanses of professional education. To help such students there are provisions of scholarships, freeships and other financial support. You should be aware of the fact that there are two categories of seats in all professional colleges one is “free seats” and another “paid seats”. Free seats are highly subsidised, you have to pay very less compared to those for paid seats. Free seats are allotted to students on the basis of their performance at the entrance tests. You have to prepare really hard if you want to secure a free seat in any of the professional colleges. If your family is unable to pay the expanses
of ‘elite’ professional courses, you may choose a professional course and college, which also promises a reasonably good career at an affordable cost. There are many other good reasons too for seeking a
career in these professions. This option should be considered if you can not get through entrance tests for professional courses. Career planning should be headed by two steps:
1. Assess your strengths and weaknesses, likings, aptitudes and interests. 2. Gather as much information as possible about the various educational opportunities and choose one that conforms to your assessment. If you do not want to pursue university education after your 10+2, you may choose some vocational courses available in different areas. The most preferred courses are the polytechnic courses of
three-year duration leading to diplomas in different branches of engineering and technology. The advantage of polytechnic courses is that in some engineering branches diploma holders can take lateral entry in engineering courses. So it is really important to have a clear idea of theses vocational courses that would be helpful in taking the appropriate decision.
A brief glimpse of each stream as follows:
Science: If a student is interested in pursuing engineering courses, such as civil, mechanical, electronics, computers, the options should be for a combination of mathematics, physics and chemistry (MPC). If you
wish to take up medicine, dentistry, dairy science, agricultural science or biological science, the combination should be biology, physics and chemistry (BPC). It is true that the advantage of choosing science stream is that you can shift to the other two streams humanities and commerce after 10+2. You can also pursue courses outside the university stream such as hotel management, fashion technology, industrial design, packaging, aircraft maintenance engineering, and post 10+2 level vocational courses.
Commerce: Next to science, commerce stream opens up with a variety of options after 10+2 level. Some examples are: company secretary-ship, chartered accountancy, cost accountancy, business management, computer. BCom. with Computer as one of the combinations is now a much sought after course
Arts/Humanities: It is not well appreciated that humanities also offer numerous options after 10+2 other than the conventional BA degree course. Except for courses in science and technology areas, students can
opt many other courses such as travel & tourism, advertising, journalism, performing arts, business management, etc. Humanities is also preferred stream for those students who sit for the civil service
examinations.
